A map of New York Island, part of Long Island and East New Jersey and the Battle of Long Island, fought on 27 August 1776 between the army of the United States, commanded by General George Washington (1732-99) and the British army, commanded by William Howe, 5th Viscount Howe (1729-1814) resulting in a British victory. American War of Independence (1775-83). Oriented with north to top.

The Battle of Long Island was also known as the Battle of Brooklyn, or the Battle of Brooklyn Heights. It was the first major battle to follow the Declaration of Independence. A 20,000-strong army of British troops and Hessian mercenaries defeated the 10,000 Rebels.
