A view of the engagement between a British squadron, commanded by Sir Samuel Hood (1762-1814), and a French squadron, commanded by Commodore Éleonore-Jean-Nicolas Soleil (1767-1824) off Rochefort on 25 September 1806. Napoleonic Wars (1803-15).

One of a pair of prints (the companion print is at RCIN 735131.b.) depicting a British squadron under the command of Sir Samuel Hood intercepting a French squadron of five frigates and two corvettes, heavily laden with stores, sailing to the French West Indies. The action took place off the port of Rochefort and resulted in a British victory, the British capturing four of the seven French ships.

The ship on the left of this view, flying the Red Ensign, is the Monarch, which is firing at the Minerve. Hood was shot in the elbow during this action, as a result of which his arm was amputated.
