GEORGE ANDREWS (ACTIVE 1794-1813)

San Domingo Bay, 1806 (Santo Domingo Bay, Dominican Republic) 18°18'00"N 70°03'00"W

published 12 Jan 1808

Aquatint with etching and engraving; printed in a bluey-grey ink on paper; laid down on paper, the paper backing brought round the edges of the recto | 47.5 x 65.4 cm (image) | RCIN 735126.a

A view of the attack and defeat of the French fleet by Vice Admiral Sir John Thomas Duckworth (1748-1817) and Rear Admiral Alexander Inglis Cochrane (1758-1832) on 6 February 1806. Napoleonic Wars (1803-15).

One of a pair of prints; the companion is at RCIN 735126.b. The lettering is very faintly engraved; the upper-case letters are engraved in outline, suggesting the possibility that this example is a proof impression. Captain Smith's name does not appear among the list of those present at this action according to Parker. Parker ascribes the engraving to R.B. Harraden, however, the initials 'R.B.' do not appear on either of these views.
