One of eighteen views of the ruins of Saragossa following the siege of 15 June to 13 August 1808. Napoleonic Wars (1803-15): Peninsular War (1808-14)

Following the Spanish declaration of war on France in June 1808 the French army, commanded by General Jean-Antoine Verdier, repeatedly stormed the city, and was repeatedly repulsed. The result was a Spanish victory, the French being compelled to lift the siege and retreat.

The fight between the Zaragozans and the French dragoons. In the attack of the 15 June, 200 French dragoons attempted to penetrate the town and they were repulsed and killed by the people, five of those who tried to escape by the Portillo door were charged by a mob of brave women and perished by their hands.
