A middle oblique view of the French expedition to Jijel 22 July-30 October 1664, showing the French navy, commanded by François de Vendôme, duc de Beaufort (1616-69), and French army forces commanded by Lieutenant-General Charles-Félix de Galéan, duc de Gadagne (1620-1700) taking the port of Jijel on 22-23 July 1664. Oriented with south to top. Campaign of Louis XIV against the pirates of the Mediterranean; expedition of Jijel (1664).
Beaufort's coat of arms as grandson of Henry IV of France appear top right.
The purpose of the expedition was to establish a naval base at Jijel from which sorties could be made against the pirates of the Mediterranean. However, after three months, now lacking food and supplies, suffering from various illnesses, combined with poor organisation and quarrelling between the commanders, the French abandoned the port and fortress of Jijel.
