Afbeeldinge van de Reviere / van London

1667

Etching and engraving; maps and letterpress text printed on the same sheet of paper | Scale: 1:80,000 approx. | RCIN 723130

Maps of the Dutch raid on the Medway, commanded by Admiral Michiel Adriaenszoon de Ruyter (1607-76) in which the British fleet lying at Gillingham and Chatham was substantially destroyed. Map 1 oriented with north-north-east to top (compass rose); Map 2 oriented with west-north-west to top (compass rose). Second Anglo-Dutch War (1665-7).

The settlement of Quienborg (Queensborough 51°25ʹ03ʺN 00°44ʹ40ʺE) is wrongly positioned on both maps. It is shown in flames in Map 2 on the north coast of the Isle of Sheppey when in fact it lies on the south-west coast to the south of Sheerness.
