A high oblique view/map of La Rochelle, besieged by the French Catholic army, commanded by Armand Jean du Plessis, Cardinal-Duke of Richelieu (9 September 1585-4 December 1642) and defended by Benjamin de Rohan, duc de Soubise (1580-1642), from 1 September 1627 to the capitulation of the city on 28 October 1628. Huguenot Rebellions or Rohan Wars (1627-1629). Oriented with north to top.
The blocade across the harbour is shown in detail, together with the surrounding forts and troop positions.
This print was published together with explanatory letterpress text which is not present in this collection. The example of the text in the Bibliothèque nationale de France carries the title: ‘PORTRAICT AV VRAY DE LA VILLE DE LA ROCHELLE / auec les nouuelles Fortifications qu’ils ont faites, & le dessein de l’attaquement & bloque- / ment fait & commencé par sa Maiesté le premier Septembre 1627’. The imprint reads: ‘A LYON, / Chez Claude Sauary, & Barthelemy Gaultier à l’Imprimerie / de taille douce, en ruë Merciere deuant S. Louys. / M. D.C. XXVIII.’ The key is numbered 1-55, corresponding with the numbers on the print:
