A view of the Battle of Lesnaya, fought on 28 September 1708 between the Russian army, commanded by Peter the Great (Pyotr Alexeyevich, 1672-1725), and the Swedish army commanded by General Adam Ludwig Lewenhaupt (1659-1719), resulting in a Russian victory. The Great Northern War (1700-21).
This etching is attributed to Nicolas III de Larmessin in the description of a ‘Rare collection of Russion battle plates’ which formed Lot 6174 at the Stockholms Auktionsverk, Stockholm (1 October 2013). The entry for the engraving at Hermitage Inventory Number: ЗРГ-23486 does not identify which Nicolas de Larmessin was the engraver. Another engraving in the Hermitage, ЗРГ-33263, identifies the artist of the original drawing as Pierre Denis II Martin. These entries give the date of the engraving as after 1722.
