PLAN of PONDICHERRY with It's Bounds Hedge, & the different Posts which form’d it’s Blockade, also the different Batteries and Attacks executed (also those intended) against it by The Army / under the command of Col:l Eyre...

1761

Pencil, ink and watercolour on paper; laid down on two pieces of very fine linen sewn together, perhaps a re-cycled garment | Scale: 1:10,550 approx. | RCIN 733021

A map of Pondicherry and environs showing the positions of the British troops, commanded by Colonel (later Sir), Eyre Coote (1726-83), during their siege of the city between 27 September 1760 and the surrender by the French on 16 January 1761. Seven Years War (1756-63): Third Carnatic War (1757-63). Oriented with west-north-west to top (cardinal points).

This is drawn to a larger scale than RCIN 733020 and shows more topographical detail; it is probable that it is the result of a ground survey by McCall. The detail of the city of Pondicherry, and of the citadel, is slightly different to that of RCIN 733020.
