Cumberland's army travelled from Cullen to Fochabers, a distance of about 16 km, in one day. This map names the Cullen, Keith and Elgin Roads, shown on their old courses. The position of the Rebels' barracks is indicated and the layout of Cumberland's army's campsite, together with the routes of their subsequent march west towards Elgin, are shown. Two fords are shown across the Spey; the northernmost of these is shown on the later Military Survey of Scotland (1747-55) in a different configuration. The river, which was a formidable obstacle, was only fordable, after the winter, from April onwards. This appears to be the only map to show the position of the rebels whose failure to contest the crossing enabled Cumberland to proceed without hindrance.
