HOMANN'S HEIRS (1724-1848)

Map of Silesia and March routes, 1741 (South Western Poland)

c.1742

Engraving; printed on paper; hand-coloured | Scale: 1:800,000 approx. | RCIN 728038.a

A map of the Prussian and Austrian march routes in Silesia in 1741. First Silesian War (1740-1742): part of the War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Oriented with north to top.

The abbreviation ‘Erlang: Zeit’, which appears top right, outside the border, possibly stands for Erlanger Realzeitung, and this map may have been made for a special issue of that newspaper.

The Prussian march route is shown in blue, from Neysse (Nysa, Opole Voivodeship, Poland, 50°28'25"N 17°20'03"E) to Brieg (Brzeg, Opole Voivodeship, Poland, 50°51'38"N 17°28'02"E). The Austrian march route is shown in yellow along the road from Sternberg (Šternberk, Olomoucký Kraj, Czech Republic 49°43'49"N 17°17'56"E) to Mollwiz (Małuowice, Opole Voivodeship, Poland 50°50'52"N 17°22'49"E).

One of four maps printed from separate copperplates on the same sheet of paper. This map is located top left. The other three are: ‘Les Environs de Czaslau avec le Plan de la Bataille d. 17 May 1742’ (RCIN 728038.b); ‘Repræsentation der den 10.t April 1742 bey dem Dorf Molwitz ... Action’ (RCIN 728038.c); ‘Theatre de la Guerre en Boheme’ (RCIN 728038.d).
