c.1771

Pencil, pen, ink and watercolour on paper | Scale: not stated. 1:18,000 approx. | RCIN 734001

A map of the camp and Battle of Alamance, fought on 16 May 1771 between the government North Carolina Provincial Militia, commanded by Governor William Tryon (1739-88), and the North Carolina Regulators, commanded by Herman Husband (1724-95), resulting in a government victory. War of the Regulation (c.1765-71). Oriented with west to top.

The Battle of Alamance takes its name from Great Alamance Creek near which it was fought; it was the final action in the so-called War of Regulation – a local conflict between citizens and colonial officials in North Carolina about taxation. It was fought between about 1,000 militia from Colonial North Carolina and 2,000 'Regulators'.

The geographical co-ordinates in the heading are given for the Alamance Battleground Historic Site.
