JOHN PRINGLE (ACTIVE 1780-1808)

Map of the Carnatic, 1780-83 (Tamil Nadu, India)

created 1785; copied 1787

Pencil, pen, ink and watercolour on two sheets of paper, joined; laid down on two pieces of coarse linen, stitched together; edged with red silk ribbon; [no brass rings for hanging, none missing]; two pink linen ties to left edge [none missing] | Scale: 1:157,778 approx. | RCIN 734059

A map of the routes of the British army, commanded by Lieutenant-General Sir Eyre Coote (1726-83) in the Carnatic, 25 August 1780-7 June 1783. Second Mysore War (1780-84). Oriented with west to top.

The geographical area covered extends from Chidambaran in the south to Pulicat in the north, and as far inland as Vellore. According to http://archiveshub.ac.uk/data/gb133engms198 (accessed 16 October 2016) there is a copy made in 1793 by a B. Jones of A book containing upwards of 4000 miles of roads in the Carnatick... by John Pringle, Captain of Guides to the army on the coast of Coromandel, Madras 1785. It is a survey of the main routes in the Carnatic region, giving topographical data such as distances and latitudes, and descriptive remarks relating to the suitability of locations for military encampment (for example, comments on the availability of good water and details of previous military engagements). Folios 162-175 describe the 'Route of the grand army in the Carnatick under the commands of Lieut. Gen. Sir Eyre Coote, Mr Gen. Sir Hector Munro and Mr Gen. James Stuart', August 1780 to June 1783. This section, which may have provided some of the source materials for this map, details the distances of marches, names of encampments, and 'some few leading occurrences', including battles with Haidar; University of Manchester, The John Rylands University Library ref GB 133 Eng MS 198.
