Map of the encampment at George Stadt, 1741 (Guantánamo River, near Guantánamo?, Cuba) 20°08'40"N 75°12'33"W
c.1741Pencil, pen, ink and watercolour on paper; laid down on coarse linen | Scale: 1:3,000 approx. | RCIN 728043
The grounds for the attribution, in the old catalogue, to ‘Captain Thomas Eng.r’ are not known. According to Conolly (List 2, no.75, p.4), a Practitioner Engineer by the name of John Thomas saw service in Cartagena and died in Flanders in 1747. No other rank is given for him, although he may have held a captain's rank in the army. If this John Thomas is not the author of this map, then it is possible that the Captain referred to in the old catalogue was a Captain of a Regiment of Foot who was temporarily appointed as an engineer. Another manuscript copy of this map by John Thomas is in the Library of Congress Call Number G4922.G83R4 1741.T5 Vault. This bears the following inscription in the rectangular space at the bottom of the map: ‘To HIS GRACE IOHN DUKE of MONTAGU this PLAN is most humbly Dedicated by HIS GRACE.S most Humble and Dutifull Servant: Iohn = Thomas.’
The encamped regiments, under the command of General Wentworth and Brigadiers Blakeney and Lowther, were: Harrison's Wentworth's. Wolfes, Frazier's, Lowther's, Wyniards' Cockran's and Cotterel's. These regiments (or battalions from these regiments) had been present at Cartagena.
Another manuscript copy of this map, attributed to Captain John Thomas, is at RCIN 728042.
