? THOMAS SANDBY (1721-98)

Order of battle at Culloden, 1746 (Culloden Moor, Highland Region, Scotland, UK) 57°28'00"N 04°05'00"W

c.1746

Ink on paper; some pricking through | 26.6 x 37.5 cm (image) | RCIN 730021

An order of battle of the Jacobite army at the Battle of Culloden, 16 April 1746. Jacobite Rebellion (1745-6).

This is the only order of battle for the rebel army in the collection. The tentative attribution to Sandby is made on the basis of stylistic similarity. The pencilled annotations ‘clanranald’ appears to be in Schultz's hand.

The First Line, under the Duke of Perth, Lord John Drummond and Lord George Murray, gives the numbers of men comprising each group as follows: Athole (500), Lochiell (600), Appin (200), Cluny (300), Lovat (500), McIntosh (400), Farquharson (200), McIntosh (300), McLeod (100), McLean (100), Clanranald (250), Keppoch (300), Glengarry (600). The rear is occupied by the Prince, Lord Gordon and Glenbucket and the Duke of Perth and Lord Ogilvy's troops, with Colonel Roy Stewart's and Kilmarnock's Guards. The total number of troops is given as 8,350.

Condition: four fold lines; possibly trimmed after the old heading was written; worn along folds; small repair to bottom of central vertical fold; surface dirt on verso of outside fold panels. Verso: bottom, right of centre, water-stained patch and ghosting from the removal of Cumberland's cipher label.
