Plan of the siege of Gibraltar, 1727 (Gibraltar, British Overseas Territory) 36°08'00"N 05°21'00"W

1727 or later

Pencil, pen, ink and watercolour on paper | Scale: 1:4,800 approx. | RCIN 727021

A plan of the siege of Gibraltar, 11 February-12 June 1727, by the Spanish, commanded by Cristóbal de Moscoso y Montemayor, against the British garrison who were supported by the navy, commanded by Admiral Sir Charles Wager (1666-1743). The Spanish withdrew from the siege. Anglo-Spanish War (1727-9). Oriented with east to top.

This plan shows the Spanish trenches and assaults on the north side of the fortifications. Lines of fire from the batteries are shown in red straight lines and the mortar trajectories are drawn with curved lines; mortar bombs are shown dropping, in flames, on the fortifications. The key refers to a 14-gun Spanish battery, formerly destroyed, which was repaired and brought back into use on 26 April.

The sketches of British ships are a reference to the supporting British fleet, commanded by Sir Charles Wager. The ship on the western side of the Rock appears to be firing at the Spanish.
