Veere and Walcheren, 1784

N:o 5 Walcheren. The Town of Veere or Camveere

1784

Pencil, pen, ink and watercolour on paper | Scale: 1:385 approx. | RCIN 734102.2.d

A combination reconnaissance plan and view graphic, together with the other four maps and plans at RCINs 734102.2.a-e, which appear to result from a clandestine intelligence gathering operation in December 1784 in advance of proposed British hostilities. Oriented with south-west to top.

This plan shows an interesting use of the colour bluey-purple for the beach which, unlike the sandy beaches on the south coast of Walcheren Island, is mud. The colour is therefore a naturalistic representation of the ground conditions.

Additional text: [left, down left side of plan in rectangular frame, a view of part of the bastion with a descriptive note; right, down right side of plan in plain rectangular frame, a descriptive key, 1-14, to the principal features of military importance:] Explanation of the Cyphers.

Five plans of part of the island of Walcheren and the attack on Flushing (Vlissingen). Formerly contained in a rough buff paper folder on which the old heading is written: XIV/102-2-a-e ['a-e' added in later hand] Walcheren, 1784. [Bottom, black pencil, in a modern hand:] Jan '87 [i.e. 1987] CMB.
