A medium/high oblique view of the Battle of Párkány, fought on 7-9 October 1683 between the armies of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and the Holy Roman Empire, commanded by Jan III Sobieski, King of Poland (1629-96) and Charles V, Duke of Lorraine (1643-90), and the Ottoman army, commanded by Grand Vizir Merzifonlu Kara Mustafa Pasha (1634/5-1683), resulting in a victory for the Polish and Imperial armies. Great Turkish War (1683-99), Ottoman-Habsburg Wars (1526-1791), Polish-Ottoman War (1683-99). Oriented with west to top; however, the 'Ipol fiume' (River Ipel), wrongly shown here as a tributary of the 'Gran fiume' (Hron), is to the north, not west; the cardinal point indicator has north-east to top.

Following the defeat of the Turkish army at Vienna on 12 September 1683, part of the Ottoman army retreated and encamped at Párkány. They were pursued by Jan III Sobieski and the Polish forces who arrived in the vicinity on 6 October. These forces were beaten back to the following Imperial army which, arriving at Párkány on 8 October, formed up and defeated the Turks in battle on the 9th. The Turks are seen here retreating towards Pest (Budapest).
