A low/medium oblique view of an action fought between 7 and 15 August 1594 near Raab, on the banks of the Little Danube, between the Turks and the Imperial army, commanded by to Don Giovanni de Medici (13 May 1567-19 July 1621; illegitimate son of Cosimo). Ottoman-Habsburg Wars: The Long War (1591/3-1606). Orientation not known.
The ‘l’Arciduca Mathias’ who is mentioned in the key is probably Archduke Matthias (24 February 1557-20 March 1619) who was Holy Roman Emperor from 1612 and made Governor of Austria in 1593, becoming head of the Habsburgs in 1606. The 20-mile-long island which has abundant livestock is probably Žitný Ostrov, one of the largest islands in the Danube up to the end of the nineteenth century, which is opposite Raab (Latin name: Javerin).
