A medium oblique view/map of the siege of Vienna, 14 July-12 September 1683, by the Ottoman army, commanded by Grand Vizir Merzifonlu Kara Mustafa Pasha (1634/5-1683) which culminated in a victory for the Holy League (Poland, Holy Roman Empire), commanded by Jan III Sobieski, King of Poland (1629-96) following the Battle of Vienna on 11-12 September 1683. Great Turkish War (1683-99), Ottoman-Habsburg Wars (1526-1791), Polish-Ottoman War (1683-99). Oriented with north to top (cardinal points) [but actually to north-east].

This is a later state of RCIN 724020. The print has evidently been printed from a worn plate and shows the following additions: top right, the arrival of the Polish, Saxon, and Bavarian troops, with two carriages being driven from General Sult's camp to meet them. Lines have been added to the compass rose, linking the cardinal points. A wood with troops and a tent, representing the position to which the Grand Vizir retreated in order to obstruct the Polish relief army has been added immediately north-west of the ‘Rotta d'Turchi’, north-west of the city. Further additions include a Turkish mine under the bastion west of the Porto Nova; files of troops entering the city by the Sthoten and di Corte gates; retreating and slain Turkish soldiers outside the battery to the west of the Porto di Corte, and two Turkish soldiers being shot near the same place. On the east side of the city two Turkish mines and two mortars, together with the mortar bomb trajectories, have been inserted.

Condition: top edge worn and torn; 1.6 cm tear to left edge.
