JOHANN LUDWIG HOGREWE (1737-1814)

Map of the siege of Harburg, 1757 (Harburg, Hamburg, Germany) 53°28'00"N 09°59'00"E

1763 or later

Pencil, pen, ink and watercolour on paper | Scale: 1:13,203 approx. | RCIN 732200.at

A map of the siege of French-held Harburg by Baron Hardenburg, 29 November to 30 December 1757 when the French surrendered. Seven Years War (1756-63). Oriented with north-east to top (cardinal points). It is possible that this is a copy by Anton Heinrich du Plat (1738-1791), a Hanoverian military engineer and cartographer, of an original drawing by Hogrewe.

The scale to the map, and the key to the conventional signs used to represent the troops is given on N.o XXXII, headed 'Remarques' (RCIN 732200.ag). The troop rectangles are coloured according to nationality: Hanoverian (red), Prussian (green), Brunswickian (yellow), Hessian (blue), French (lilac).
