A high oblique view of Dole, unsuccessfully besieged from 28 May to 15 August 1636 by the French, commanded by Henri II de Bourbon-Condé (1588-1646). Thirty Years War (1618-1648). Oriented with north-west to top (cardinal points).
A different, but very similar engraving of this map, with the blank panel top right filled with a key, and with a German title, top centre: Wahrer Grundrisz der Statt und belägerung Dolle in Burgund angefangen den 1/11. juny 1637 is in volume III of Merian’s Theatrum Europaeum between pp.578 and 579. Note that although the date of 1637 is given in the title of Merian’s map, the text on page 579, which describes the siege, clearly states that it occurred in 1636. The George III catalogue entry and George III heading are also in error in assigning the date of 1635 to this event.
