Etched and engraved view and letterpress text printed on separate sheets of paper, joined; mounted on paper; gilt edges top and right | 29.2 x 37.0 cm (image and sheet) | RCIN 723018

A high oblique view of the fortified encampment of the Imperial army, commanded by Melchior, Reichsgraf von Hatzfeldt (20 October 1593-9 January 1658) and Johann Joachim, Graf von Wahl (1590-31 August 1644) at Zons 1642. Thirty Years War (1618-1648). Oriented with west-south-west to top.

After the Battle of Honnecourt (see RCIN 723016), the Spanish victor, Francisco de Melo, marched and camped near Namur. It was thought that he might have intended to attack the Weimar army (who were in French service) who were encamped near Uerdingen, east of Krefeld. The Imperial troops encamped at Zons would therefore have allowed a pincer movement, together with Melo's army, which would have threatened the Weimar soldiers at Uerdingen.

The print shows an interesting combination of plan depiction for the tents in the camp, and high oblique view for the rest of the detail. The letterpress text gives the keys, A-I, K-T, V-Y, followed by symbols, then aa-ii, kk-oo, and 1-20, to the Imperial and Bavarian infantry and cavalry regiments, and the combined general staff officers quarters.
