Etching and engraving; printed on paper; mounted on paper (Mount Type B); gilt edge to top | 27.4 x 34.1 cm (image) | RCIN 722081

A medium oblique view of the siege of Rheinfelden from 25 June 1634. Thirty Years War (1618-1648).

This view shows the quarters of one of the commanders of the besieging troops, ‘Herr: Gen: Maior Exc. Reingraff Johan Philips’ whose account of this action appears on pp.301 [printed as ‘103’]-302 of Merian’s Theatrum Europaeum, vol.III (1670 edition). ‘Philips’ was Johann Philipp von Salm-Kyrburg in Möhringen, a Rheingraf and Generalleutnant. Coincidentally, he was killed four years later at the Battle of Rheinfelden (1638).

This print apparently appeared in one of the volumes of Relationis historicae semestralis continuatio published in 1634 by Conrad Memmius under the name of Jacob Francus (Renate Jürgensen, ‘Biblioteca Norica’ Teil 2. Beiträge zum Buch- und Bibliothekswesen 43. Harrassowitz Verlag, Wiesbaden, (2002). p.1139, refers to Merian’s Theatrum Europaeum among others as containing maps or prints). See also Bruno Weber, ‘Zeugen der Zeit. Kommentare zu Einblattillustrationen des 17. Jahrhunderts’ in Zeitschrift der Schweizerischen Bibliophilen-Gesellschaft: revue de la Société Suisse des Bibliophiles, Band 20 (1977) Heft 2, pp.135-151 where this print is illustrated and its provenance is given in note 11 on p.151.
