A map, with manuscript annotations, of Brabant showing the march routes and encampments of the Allied army during 1747 and 1748. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Oriented with north to top.
This map appears to comprise sheets 4, 5, 9, 10, of Crepy's republication, for the market created by the War of the Austrian Succession, of Eugene Henri Fricx's Carte des Pays-Bas et des frontières de France (1703-1712) to which his nephew, George Fricx, added four northern sheets sometime during the war, two of which form the basis of the northern part of this assemblage. The map has been used as a base on which to plot the movements of the armies in 1747 and 1748. The annotations are all by François Hancko.
The annotation naming ‘Milord Craufurd’ on the back of the map undoubtedly refers to John Lindsay, 20th Earl of Crawford (1702-49). He was well-known to King George II and to the Duke of Cumberland. He fought in the Russo-Turkish War of 1736-9. He also fought at the Battle of Dettingen, the Jacobite Rebellion and the Battles of Fontenoy and Raucoux. He served in Flanders with the Duke of Cumberland during the War of the Austrian Succession. He was known for his ability as a cartographer and this map may have belonged to him, or have been sent to the Duke by him.

Condition: folded along the gussets; surface dirt on the verso suggests that the map was stored folded at some stage; further heavy surface dirt along the bottom indicates that the map was also, at some time, stored rolled and tied; the ink anotation ‘Brabant’ would then have been visible to identify the map
