Cumberland remained at Inverness for nearly a month following the Battle of Culloden and then moved to Fort Augustus. This plan shows one of the campsites along the way, straddling one of General Wade's military roads. Some sources (Speck 1992, p.92; Charteris 1913, p.282) state that Cumberland arrived at Fort Augustus on 23 May, yet this plan, if the date reflects the date of the content, shows that the Duke was some 50 km (31 miles) away from Fort Augustus on 23 May. It is possible that the date given by William Eyres is the date of execution of the map; however, the dates of his other encampment plans on the Culloden campaign reflect the date of the action.
The Duke's HQ is marked near the church in Dores and eight battalions of foot: Barrel's 4th Foot (Lieutenant-General William Barrell, Colonel, 8 August 1734-9) and Sackville's (probably the 20th Foot of which Sackville became Colonel on 9 April 1746), Campbell (possibly the 21st Foot, Colonel John Campbell 4th Duke of Argyll 1 November 1738-52); Dejean (37th Foot, Lieutenant-General Louis Dejean Colonel 9 April 1746-52); Wolfe (possible 8th Foot; Lieutenant-General Edward Wolfe, Colonel, 25 April 1745-59); Houghton (24th Foot; Brigadier-Genereal Daniel Houghton, Colonel, 21 June 1746-7), Conway (Field Marshal Hon. Henry Seymour Conway, Colonel, 6 April 1746-9), Skelton (12th Foot, Lieutenant-General Henry Skelton, Colonel, 28 May 1745-57), together with the artillery. All colonels' dates are taken from Leslie (1974).
Condition: one fold line; linen backing is two pieces sewn together; brown staining to both sides, especially verso. Verso: top left, water-stained patch and shadow from the removal of Cumberland's cipher label which may have been beneath linen.
