Lines on St Peter's Hill, 1747

c.1747

Pencil on paper | Scale: not stated. 1:10,250 approx. | RCIN 730158.f

A sketch of the intrenched line at St Peter's Hill near Maastricht, 1747. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Oriented with south-west to top.

A drawing of the southern two thirds of the intrenched line at St Peter's Hill showing, in particular, the crossing place across the sunken area at the southern end. The shape of this part of the line is not consistent with the portrayal on RCIN 730159; the circles in the ground within the line, to the south of Lichtenberg Castle (not named), probably represent chalk or lime pits. There is no explanation to the letters on the map.

One of eight sketches of the line and encampment on the west bank of the Maas which was part of the Allied army encampments which were made to the south and east of Maastricht after the Battle of Lafelt (2 July 1747), and while the siege of Bergen op Zoom (14 July-18 September 1747) was being conducted. The geographical relationship between the camp at St Peter's Hill and the rest of the army is shown on RCIN 730142. See RCINs 730158.a-h.
