Pencil, ink and watercolour on four sheets of paper, joined | Scale: 1:61,700 approx. | RCIN 729003

A map of the encampments of the Allied army in Flanders in 1744 and 1745 with the order of battle at Fontenoy, 11 May 1745. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). Oriented with north to top.

The topographical details have probably been copied and enlarged from one of the 1740s re-issues of Fricx's map of Brabant and the Low Countries. The geographical coverage extends from Ghent in the north to Mons in the south and from Lille in the west to Malines in the east.

The key explains that the camps, march routes and dates for the 1744 campaign of the Allies are distinguished by colour: Austrians (green), British (red), Hanoverians (yellow), Dutch (orange) and French (violet). The march routes are in yellow with red dots; the camps are marked by dates and numbers, the numbers are placed at the army’s front; the trenches and bridges constructed across the rivers are drawn in black; a symbol denotes the headquarters. The march routes of the 1745 campaign are in orange with red dots; and here the Dutch are shown in blue.
