Pencil, pen, ink and watercolour on paper; some pricking through | 31.4 x 40.5 cm (image and sheet) | RCIN 729034

An order of battle of the Allied army in Flanders under the command of Marshals d'Arenberg and Wade, August 1744. War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48).

The style of writing and draughtsmanship of this order of battle is reminiscent of that of the engineers Daniel Paterson (active 1746-d.1749) or Dugal Campbell (d.1757).

Regiments are coloured according to nationality: British (red), Hanoverian (yellow), Dutch (orange), Austrian (green). This is a smaller order of battle than those at RCINs 729031-3; several squadrons and battalions are absent, reflected in the smaller number of General Officers.

The General Officers of the First Line are Generals Nassau, De Wendt, Honywood; Lieutenant-Generals Courriere, Coenders, Swartsenberg, Chanclos, Sommerfeldt, Ligonier, Campbell; Major-Generals Hompesch, Constans, Lanoy, Middachten, Soubiron, Campbell, Pultney, Wentworth, Launay, Montignie, Albemarle; Brigadiers-General Heust V: Oyen, Vrybergen, Salis, Skelton, Crawford, Bland.

The General Officers of the Second Line are General Cronstrom; Lieutenant-Generals Geisrugg, D'Ilten, Hawley; Major-Generals Pfiosky, Schak, Leuwe, MacHugo, Zastrow, Howard, Onslow, St. Clair, Rothes; Brigadiers-General Slipenbach, Burmania, Boselager, Ingoldsby, Churchill.

There is no battalion of Scotch Highlanders. The reserve corps are commanded by Major-General Forgatsch.

Condition: seven fold lines; formerly folded to 11.9 x 6.9 cm; trimmed; a small hole, top left; pin holes in margins.
