? BOARD OF ORDNANCE

Siege of Bouchain, 1711

1712 or later

Pencil, pen, ink and watercolour on paper; laid down on coarse linen | Scale: 1:12,600 approx. | RCIN 726075

A map of the siege of Bouchain, 6 August-13 September 1711, by the Allied army, commanded by John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough (1650-1722), resulting in the surrender of the French, commanded by Marshal Claude Louis Hector de Villars (1643-1734). War of the Spanish Succession (1701-14). Oriented with south-east to top.

The date of 6 August-13 September for the beginning of the siege and surrender of the fortress is taken from Ostwald (2007), p.343.

This map is drawn in what appears to be the standard style of the British Board of Ordnance Drawing Room, and could have been produced at any time between 1712 and the third quarter of the eighteenth century. It appears to be in the same hand as RCIN 726076. It shows the generalised outlines of the fortifications of Bouchain, and the villages of Wavrchin (Wavrechain-sous-Faulx 50°16'22"N 03°17'11"E) and Hordain (50°15'47"N 03°18'48"E).
