A map of Ghent showing the siege undertaken by the Allied army, commanded by John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough (1650-1722) from 18 December, resulting in the French capitulation on the 31st. War of the Spanish Succession (1701-14). Oriented with west to top (cardinal points).

This map shows the extent of the water defences which surrounded Ghent. In January 1709 they were frozen over, thus reducing their effectiveness and compelling the French to surrender the town.

Condition: six fold lines; formerly folded to 16.1 x 13.6 cm. Verso: induced discolouration; bottom, right of centre, shadow and ghosting from the removal of Cumberland's cipher label; remains of guard; surface dirt.
