A view of the Battle of the Saintes (or, to the French, the Battle of Dominica), 9 to 12 April 1782. American War of Independence (1775-83).

The British fleet, under the command of Admiral George Bridges Rodney, first Baron Rodney (bap.1718-92), defeated the French, commanded by François Joseph Paul, comte de Grass (1722-88). The British victory resulted in the abandonment by the French and Spanish of their planned invasion of Jamaica.

Additional text: [bottom, between title and imprint:] In the above Action was captur'd the French Admiral the Count de Grasse, in La Ville de Paris of 110 Guns, with Le Hector of 74, Le Cesar of 74, Le Glorieux of 74, L'Ardent of 64 & Le Diadem / of 74 Guns sunk in the Action. The Caton of 64 Guns, Jason of 64, L'Amiable of 32, and Ceres of 18 Guns, were afterwards taken by a detachment under the command of Adm.l Lord Hood.

Condition: no fold lines; brown discolouration and surface dirt to both sides.
