A view of the Battle of the Saintes (or, to the French, the Battle of Dominica), 9 to 12 April 1782, on the evening of the final day of the battle. American War of Independence (1775-83). See also Plate I at RCIN 734076.a.

The British fleet, under the command of Admiral George Bridges Rodney, first Baron Rodney (bap.1718-92), defeated the French, commanded by François Joseph Paul, comte de Grass (1722-88). The British victory resulted in the abandonment by the French and Spanish of their planned invasion of Jamaica.

Additional text: [bottom centre, between title and imprint:] The Ships in the distance represent part of the French Fleet retreating, closely pursued by some of the British, till darkness put an end to the Combat. The Ship in the Fore Ground Dismasted is the Glorieux and in Possession; The Ships to the left hand Le Cæsar, Le Hecteur and Ardent in Possession &c.
