A map of the Battle of Brandywine, fought on 11 September 1777 between the British and Hessians, commanded by the Commander-in-Chief, William Howe, 5th Viscount Howe (1729-1814) and the Americans, commanded by General George Washington (1732-99), resulting in a British victory. American War of Independence (1775-83). Oriented with north to top.

A later state of this map bears the imprint of ‘April 13.th 1784’.

A hand-coloured key top centre of the map shows that the British positions were coloured red, those of the Hessians and Anspachers were in blue, and those of the Rebels in yellow. Engraved and published some seven months after the action, part of this plan was based on the surveys of a Hessian artillery soldier, Lieutenant S.W. Werner.
