Map of encampment at Hameln, 1779 (Hameln, Lower Saxony, Germany) 52°06'14"N 09°21'22"E

c.1779

Pencil, pen, ink and watercolour on paper | Scale: 1:14,000 approx. | RCIN 734048.a

A map of the encampments at Hameln, 16-26 September 1779. Oriented with north to top.

This map bears the signature of General Wangenheim, probably Georg August von Wangenheim (1706-80), who was appointed General of Infantry in 1777. It shows the scene of his last undertaking of any note, the great manoeuvres of the Hanoverian army which took place at Hameln between 16 and 26 September 1779. This map must have been made sometime between then and Wangenheim's death just a year later.
