Pencil, pen, ink and watercolour on paper | Scale: 1:7,257 approx. | RCIN 734041

A map of the encampment at Hengrave, 6 July-6 October 1778. American War of Independence (1775-83). Oriented with north-east to top (cardinal points).

The two camps are annotated 'A' (Infantry) and 'B' (Cavalry). This map appears to be a rough sketch for the fair drawing at RCIN 712567. The encamped regiments, with the colours of their facings in parentheses, were: [between the River Lark and Culford] 3rd Dragoons (blue); 4th Dragoons (green); 7th Dragoons (white); 10th Dragoons (yellow). Just north of Bury St Edmunds: 1st West Riding of Yorkshire Militia (green); Warwickshire Militia (green). Major General Warde's headquarters are noted as Hengrave Hall, the home of Sir Thomas Gage.

Condition: one fold line; surface dirt along left and right edges. Verso: induced discolouration; surface dirt along left edge, consistent with the map having been rolled.
