Engraving; printed on paper; hand-coloured; manuscript annotations | Scale: 1:43,000 approx. | RCIN 734032.al

A map of London with manuscript annotations showing the location of the troops during the Gordon Riots at the beginning of June 1780. Gordon Riots (1780). Oriented with north to top.

Other examples of this printed map have, bottom right, outside border, the statement: 'R. Parr Sculp'. This has been erased on this Royal Library example and Daniel Paterson's name has been written in the space created by the erasure.

The manuscript annotations by Daniel Paterson are drawn on Rocque's single-sheet map of the country 10 miles round London which was published in 1748 (Howgego 1978, p.98, no.98). The bibliographical details have been cropped as has the dedication and bottom part of the coat of arms of John, 2nd Duke of Montagu, to whom the map was dedicated. The camps, stations, quarters of the troops which were drafted into London to control the Gordon Riots of 1780, have been marked on the map in manuscript by Daniel Paterson.
