A middle to high oblique view of the Battle of Honnecourt (also know as the Battle of Châtelet) fought on 26 May 1642 between the Spanish army, commanded by Francisco de Melo de Portugal y Castro, Marquis de Tor de Laguna, Comte d'Assumar (1597-18 December 1651), Governor of the Spanish Netherlands 1641-1644, and the French, commanded by Antoine III de Gramont, comte de Guiche (1604-12 July 1678) resulting in a Spanish victory. Franco-Spanish War (1635-1659). Orientation not indicated.
The Imperial arms of Philip IV of Spain (reigned 1621-1665) are top left, and those of Francisco de Melo are top right.
This action occurred when Melo, with an army of 10,000 men, intercepted the French army, commanded by Marshal Harcourt, at the abbey at Honnecourt (Guthrie p.191 and Mesa p.91), seen here in the centre background.
A different state of this print is bound in at ff.175 of a manuscript account entitled Relación de la campaña de Flandes en 1642 by Juan Antonio Vincart, Secretary to the Governors of the Spanish Netherlands between 1633 and 1650 (IIR F 489; Vojenský historický ústav Praha; Praha; Česko). The different state, which is otherwise identical, is identified by the position of Melo's coat of arms which, instead of being tr, as in 723016, is engraved directly above the title cartouche.
There is no accompanying printed key to the letters and numbers on RCIN 723016 but Vincart's journal contains a manuscript key (ff.176-177) as follows (transcribed following the capitalisation of the text):
