A view of the naval Battle of Algeciras, fought on 6 July 1801 in which the British were defeated by the Franco-Spanish fleet. French Revolutionary Wars (1792-1802): Anglo-Spanish War (1798-1802).

The action depicted in this view was the First Battle of Algeciras Bay in the Strait of Gibraltar in which the British, under the command of Rear Admiral James Saumarez (1757-1836; 1st Baron Saumarez) were initially repulsed by the larger Franco-Spanish fleet and had one ship, the Hannibal, captured. The second battle, fought on the 12 July, resulted in a British victory.
