A view of the action between the Mars and l'Hercule off Brest on 21 April 1798. French Revolutionary Wars (1792-1802): War of the First Coalition (1792-8).

After a fierce duel between the two ships, the French suffered two hundred and fifty killed and wounded and surrendered to the British, under the command of Alexander Hood who was killed during the action. The French ship, a Téméraire class ship of the line and just hours out on her maiden voyage, was taken into the British Navy, becoming a 74-gun third rate ship of the line.
