Having been repulsed during the First Battle of Algeciras Bay on 6 July, Rear Admiral James Saumarez (1757-1836; 1st Baron Saumarez), in the night time action shown in this view, with the three British ships Caesar, Venerable, and Superb in the middle and right foreground, captured Spanish ship San Antonio, having caused the Real Carlos and San Hermenegildo to sink each other in the conflagration which can be seen in the background. There were no British losses and Saumarez was made Knight of the Bath.
