Etching and engraving; printed on paper; mounted on paper, mount cropped (Mount Type not discernible) | 39.0 x 52.7 cm (image and sheet) | RCIN 721135

A view of the Venetian and Neapolitan fleets in order of battle on 28 May 1618 off the port of Brindisi. Oriented with south-west to top.

This print shows the Venetian fleet, commanded by Pietro Barbarigo (10 January 1569-29 November 1618), who had been appointed Captain General on 2 May. Barbarigo's ship is shown in the vanguard. Passing Brindisi, Barbarigo captured four ships and three brigs of Turkish pirates and spent the next month patrolling the Adriatic. This show of strength caused the Spanish, whose fleet had been stationed at Brindisi, to leave the area.

The ships are shown in order of battle and each has the name of its commander engraved against it. The coastline strtetches from San Cataldo (40°23ʹ26ʺN 18°18ʹ01ʺE) in the south-east to Biestici (Peschici? 41°56ʹ43ʺN 16°00ʹ58ʺE). The date of 1616 in the George III heading and George III catalogue entries is a misreading of the date in the title.
