A view of the Château of Moyen, besieged from 1 August to 15 September 1639 by François de L'Hospital, seigneur du Hallier et de Beynes, Governor of Lorraine (1583-20 April 1660), resulting in the surrender of the castle.

This appears to be the first state of this print. The second state is distinguished by the correction of the spelling, in the title, of the word 'ancinement' to 'ancienement' (Meaume, no.1176.p.170-2).

The castle was held by a garrison of 100 men of the Lorraine regiment Saint-Baslemont, commanded by Captain Touvenin. The regiment, which was ill paid and ill disciplined, had taken over the castle in 1636 and used it as a base for marauding parties into the surrounding countryside. In order to restore order, it was besieged by du Hallier. Touvenin and his men only surrendered after six weeks and once two long breaches had been made in the walls, as shown in this view. (Laurent, p.263.)

The mention of 'Quiquengrogne' in the title refers to the time when the Château de Moyen was built in the fifteenth century by Conrad Bayer de Boppart (d.20 April 1459), bishop of Metz who forced the citizens of l'Épinal, whose seigneur, or Lord of the Manor, he was, to come to the château to do statute labour. This appears to have caused adverse comment from the neigbouring Lords and, to show his contempt for their complaints de Poppart christened the château 'Qui-qu'en-grogne': 'Who grumble about it' (Firmin-Didot p.101.)
