A map of the banks of the River Liffey between Dublin and Lucan, 1774. Oriented with south-south-east to top (cardinal points). This larger-scale map of the banks of the River Liffy by John Cleeve Pleydell shows in detail the military exercises in the grounds of Phoenix Park. Pleydell was in Ireland during 1774 and other maps made by him during this period are in the British Library: Sketch map of part of the South of Ireland 1774 BL Maps K.Top.51.31.1.11 TAB END with Remarks upon the South of Ireland 1774. The manuscript notes, perhaps in Pleydell's rough hand, which accompany this map, entitled ‘Movements / of the two Corps on / the Banks of the Liffy / July 16.th 1774’ which give an account of the exercises on that day, are at RCIN 1083492. Condition: two fold lines; surface dirt along right edge; tear to right edge repaired before being laid down on canvas. Verso: brown discolouration; induced discolouration; heavy surface dirt along right edge consistent with having been rolled.
