A view of an encampment at Fornham in 1782. According to Rochefoucauld, (2011), p.16 note 2, a great military camp of volunteers was held in a field opposite the church of Fornham St Martin in 1782. The point from which this view was taken is not clear. In order for the church of Fornham St Martin, which is centre of the view, with the tower to the left, to be seen in this position, the artist would have to be facing north-west. The identity of the large house to the left might be Fornham Hall, drawn to artistic effect with the distance much foreshortened. In the foreground of the view are four or five conical humps in the ground, two with smoke bellowing from the top; these are the camp ovens. Eight artillery wagons are parked to the right. Condition: one fold line; creased along left and right edges; one tear to left edge; two tears to right edge; bottom left corner diagonally cut off; brown discolouration to both sides. Verso: bottom centre, a small circle [with a leaf?] stamped in red ink.
