List of Austrian army, 1738

1738 or later

Engraving; printed on paper; hand-coloured | 23.7 x 21.2 cm (image and neatline) | RCIN 728014

A table showing the strength of the Imperial Austrian army in 1738. Published sometime before 29 March 1738, this tabulated list, surrounded by a decorative border depicting artefacts of war, surmounted by the imperial double-headed eagle, gives the names of the regiments, and numbers of men in each, of the infantry, cuirassiers, dragoons, and hussars in the army of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI (1685-1740; ruled 1711-40), whose cipher with the double-headed imperial eagle surmounts the table, for the year 1738. The total number of men in 93 regiments was 161,400. The colours in the triangular shapes to the left of each regimental name probably represent the colours of parts of the uniform, such as facings, cuffs, waistcoats, etc. Isaac Dunant, who was presumably the ‘M.r Dunant’ in whose communication dated 29 March 1738 this list was sent, was the British chargé d'affaires in Vienna from 1737 to May 1738, and conducted diplomatic business in Vienna when Sir Thomas Robinson, the British Minister in Vienna, was away in April 1738. Condition: six fold lines; trimmed; formerly folded to 9.1 x 7.7 cm, or larger. Verso: surface dirt along fold lines and outward fold panel.
