Map of encampment at Saint-Omer, 1788 (Saint-Omer, Nord-Pas-de-Calais, France) 50°45'00"N 02°15'00"E
1788Pencil, pen, ink and watercolour on paper, with one small flap, 5.8 x 8.2 cm, giving details of different movements | Scale: 1:21,457 approx. | RCIN 734110.2.b
The manoeuvres took place over an area extending from the western edge of Saint-Omer, and was bordered by Zudausques (50°44'55"N 02°08'51"E), Leulinghem (50°44'07"N 02°05'33"E), Setques (50°42'41"N 02°09'30"E), Wizemes (50°42'42"N 02°14'35"E), and Blendecques (50°43'06"N 02°17'09"E), all of which settlements are marked on the map. In his accompanying letter (RCIN 734110.2.a), Simcoe comments on the accuracy of this map even though it was not the product of an original survey. It is possible that Lieutenant Spencer used, as part of his source materials, the Carte de Cassini, which had been published for this area about thirty years earlier.
