Order of battle of the Hanoverian army, 1729
1729 or laterPencil, pen, ink and watercolour on paper; laid down on coarse linen | 34.4 x 30.7 cm (image) | RCIN 727028.b
This order of battle probably relates to one of the reviews which were held on the heathlands to the east of Hanover, in the area of the Eilenriede forests, in the vicinity of the Pferdeturm, a medieval tower. It was probably one of several military reviews undertaken by George II during his first visit to Hanover as King of Great Britain in the summer of 1729.
The General Officers of the First Line are Lieutenant-General de Melvil; Major-Generals Lucius, de Campen; Brigadiers Ponpietin, Wendt, Behr, Rhoden.
The General Officers of the Second Line are Lieutenant-General de Hardenberg; Major-Generals de Hasberg, d’Schlüter; Brigadiers de Busch, d’Schwan, d’Wurm, d’Schulze. The Artillery is in the rear.
A summary of the strength of the cavalry, bottom left, gives a total of 200 men for the Guard du Corps, 14 squadrons of cavalry each of 175 men, 15 squadrons of dragoons, each of 178 men, giving a total of 5,320 troops, and 21 battalions each of 711 men giving 14,931 infantrymen.
