A map of the country round Salamanca showing the movements of the Allied army before the battle, and the Battle of Salamanca, fought on 22 July 1812 between the Allied army, commanded by General Arthur Wellesley (1st Duke of Wellington; 1769-1852), and the French, commanded, first, by General Auguste Frédéric Louis Viesse de Marmont, 1st Duke of Ragusa (1774-1852), and second, by Bertrand, comte Clausel (1772-1842) resulting in an Allied victory. Napoleonic Wars (1803-15): Peninsular War (1808-14). Oriented with north to top (compass rose).

The Battle of Salamanca was won by the British and allies but at the cost of the life of General John Gaspard le Marchant (1766-1812), the founder of the Royal Military College at High Wycombe, and a favourite of George III.
