Napoleonic Wars (1803-15): Peninsular War (1808-14).

The Battle of Salamanca was won by the British army but at the cost of the life of General le Marchant (1766-1812), whose cavalry brigade can be seen on its famous charge in the right of this view. Le Marchant was the founder of the Royal Military College at High Wycombe, which had moved to Sandhurst in 1813, and a favourite of George III.
